that he died. The ships physician insisted that the disease was not cholera and that there were no other cases aboard. Fear killed this man. No other Chicago physician died of cholera.

There is no better illustration than that classic fable of the wise man who, while on his way to Bagdad, met the plague. The wise man asked the plague the purpose of his journey, and the answer was:

"To kill five thousand men."

When the wise man returned, he met the plague coming away from Bagdad. He said to the plague:

"You said you were only going to kill five thousand men
and now I hear you have killed fifty thousand."

"Oh, no!" replied the plague. "I only killed five thousand. Fear killed the others."

There is literal truth in the familiar expression, "Paralyzed with fear." When
