we really begin to know people, we really discover reasons for helping and loving them, when we learn their limitations. One ought to be as free to admit that one's mother or one's brother is prejudiced as to attribute prejudice to a stranger. To discern the prejudice, and yet remain loyal to the ideal for which the loved one is striving, is indeed to show that one really loves. It is a false sense of loyalty which leads us to defend some people merely because they are near and dear, whatever their attitude may be. Again, prejudice may relate to a man's beliefs. Here is my friend, for example, who is so bent in one direction that he is blind to the only consideration which would make it possible for him to understand his chosen belief. Every item that tends to confirm his belief he quickly seizes upon. His mind is so turned against those who do not agree with him that he is unable to see any truth in their position.
