Granted the courageous study of the whole situation, in which nothing is ignored through prejudice, denied on theory, or arbitrarily put aside, we may well make it the starting-point for fresh suggestions, ideal pictures, and wise emotions. But it is through conscious purpose with its selective power and its rational processes that mastery is attained.

Hence the successful man is one who studies the whole situation to which he must adapt himself, making allowances for the slightest possibilities of error if a man of science, for all the factors that might bring failure if a man of affairs, and thus on through the professions and vocations. He has both an ideal outlook or hypothesis, a plan to be tried, and a working faith or method of practical adjustment by which to keep in motion, or meet the contingencies of the passing hour. He understands and makes use of processes, but does not allow himself to become submerged by them, or in any way a prisoner within the means employed to attain his end.
