adversary may whisper: "You will forget God if you are prospered." To all these suggestions this is the reply: "Lead me, my Father, away from the evil of this, into thy safety," and we are then to remember to leave the issue with God, trusting him to grant our heart's desire, and at the same time deliver us from its snare.

After being baptized with the Holy Spirit, there came to Jesus his first testing, through which he passed unscathed. The good men receive may seem to bring them into evil experiences, just as light seems to bring shadows. Yet as shadows are no part of the light, so these temptations are no part of the spiritual life, and are to be dealt with as we deal with shadows pass safely through them by carrying the lamp of the Lord. "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path" (Ps. cxix:105).
