The divine purpose springs from the divine love; the fulness of the divine love is the reason for being of the universe; the universe of beings and things was needed that the divine love might be fulfilled, be made complete. The central principle of the universe is the life whose nature is to proceed forth, to become universal; hence to proceed from the one to the many, then unite the many in unity of purpose, oneness of life and spirit. What does this signify? How can it be? First, let us recognise that we know not what love is, if we judge by what is ordinarily called by that name. It seems difficult to understand how God can be Love, even if we take our clue from the noblest affections in human life. For we think of love as a spirit or life, flowing, as it were, from some one, or uniting two or more beings; and we usually insist that love is a kind of mystery and is
