When we examine the weft and warp of the fabric of history, we find revealed within the woven threads

the historical context of such supposedly novel teachings as:

and we shall see that they are in all essentials hoary with age.

WE are told by historians that the ancient Chinese were not only experts in the use of herbs of all kinds, but also familiar with the theory and practice of mental healing.

A few years ago, after the 1906 Earthquake, some preachers were leveling the charge that the plague which followed the quake was due to God's wrath at the dreadful treatment of the Chinese population during the first outbreak in 1900.

A colleague present in San Francisco during the 2nd outbreak of that dreadful pestilence remarked that in contrast to the first outbreak, after the earthquake the Chinese Six Companies built the Tung Wah Dispensary in Trenton Alley which offered excellent care using both herbal concoctions and psychic healing.

The old Egyptian monuments bear witness to the same fact the healers of that land set bones, were skilled in dentistry, and availed themselves of an extensive set of pharmacopoeia. The discovery of a remarkable engraved stone allowed scholars to decipher ancient Egyptian medical papyri such as that discovered by our Edwin Smith, and of course the Hearst Papyrus discovered by George Reisner illuminate the great extent to which the Ancient Egyptians combined herbal and surgical treatment with psychic healing.

Likewise the Hebrews were not unaware of its principles, for one of their poets said a thousand years before Christ,

• "My bones wax old through my groaning all day long,"
• "My moisture is changed as with the drought of summer,"
• "My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws,"

saying as plainly as words can do that mental depression had kindled fires of fever in his blood.

Another Hebrew scientist, philosopher, sage, said, "A merry heart is a good medicine, but a broken spirit drieth up the bones." The gentle reader availed of the wisdom of the bible can easily observe that when this is combined with:

“And by the river upon the bank thereof, on this side and on that side, shall grow all trees for meat, whose leaf shall not fade, neither shall the fruit thereof be consumed: it shall bring forth new fruit according to his months, because their waters they issued out of the sanctuary: and the fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine.” --- Ezekiel 47:12

“Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.” --- Psalms 51:7

“For Isaiah had said, Let them take a lump of figs, and lay it for a plaister upon the boil, and he shall recover.” --- Isaiah 38:21

We are illuminated as to the use of psychic healing by the first of God's chosen.

Homer sang of Aesculapius, whom the Greeks afterwards elevated to the circle of the gods as the god of healing.
