President Butler, in his annual opening address to the students and faculty of Columbia University, pointed out that the colleges generally were spending too much time in teaching men to earn a living --- too little time in helping men to learn to live. The many can earn a livelihood; but it takes most men a lifetime, if they acquire it at all, to acquire the fine art of learning to live. President Ferry of Hamilton was quoted last spring in the newspapers as saying that the young men and women of the colleges of today, speaking generally, were interested in truth and service but that they could not achieve faith in a personal living God. Dr. Gordon, of Old South Church, Boston, who delivered the baccalaureate sermon at the Williams College Commencement in 1922, said that it makes no difference how successful a man may be in the calling he has selected for his work, if he cannot make a success of his personal life.
