consider the saying, and in today's understanding search for its meaning. These words
came to Jacob "in the visions of the night." This
is when personal thought hears, in the darkness
of its own ignorance. It does not indicate clear
hearing; it certainly does not suggest that the
Divine Will was perfectly understood, but rather,
was received through a dull consciousness.
A subtle temptation is exposed to us in this.
Do we not often hear Divine Will as it is colored
by our own desire? Surely, if we go to Divine
Wisdom and claim our intelligence wholly in it,
without any holding to individual will or desire,
such pure thought will receive perfect consciousness. This "hearing" will not be in the "visions
of the night," but in clear day. This, then, reveals that Israel heard not Divine Will clearly,
and understood not what he heard.
There are some who say, "Does not God give
us all these things for our present help and supply? I pray for God's blessing on them, and then
feel that I do his will in using them for my good.
I find my good health in climate, food, exercise
and herbs, all of which God has surely given us,
and by His will we use them." Certainly this is
the way that seemeth right; but what is the end
thereof? Half of the world is starving and freezing; all the world is suffering and dying, "the end
thereof is death." The fruit or result of such belief
