THE LORD'S SUPPER - p. - 351

According to the Syrian custom, they sit on the floor in a circle at this meal. Large dishes containing different kinds of food are set before them; the food is lifted into the mouth with small shreds of thin bread. Even liquid food is sometimes "dipped up" with pieces of bread formed like the bowl of the spoon. Each guest is privileged to reach and dip his bread in the dish.

All dipped in turn in one nearest Jesus. Judas Iscariot was eating in the same fashion as the other disciples he drank wine out of the same cup. The contents of one cup of wine was drunk by the whole company as a seal of their friendship with one another.

"Remembrance" phrases are legion among Syrians; there is never an account of fraternal feasting in Syria complete without the mention of remembrance. A "sop" is a choice bit of food handed only to one of cherished friendship --- a gift of true friendship.

"When he had dipped the sop Jesus gave it to Judas Iscariot and said to him: " That thou doest, do quickly." Now, no man at the table knew for what intent he spake thus unto him, but they thought many things. Judas having received the sop went immediately out, evidently to obey his master's instructions,
