Visions were clouded, and all passed through the sea, sense of separation from God, duality. To them Moses was the highest.

The famine was not a famine 'of thirst, but of hearing the words of the Lord. The "fiery serpent" --- purifying wisdom. The people were getting into a negative condition, and murmured. "Fire" --- burning away, God's love a consuming fire. The only cure of adultery and idolatry is Wisdom Light. The fiery serpent is the power that leads us away from ignorance. The literal makes God a most cruel master, but he is always exercising wisdom to lead us out of ignorance, the thing that makes it sting is the holding on to one's conceptions. Moses made a serpent of brass; they had to look high to get wisdom.

The Moabites were distressed when they knew the Israelites had come against them. Silver and gold was a temptation.

To Balaam the Lord said, "Do not this," then later he heard God say "Go." Sometimes when there is a great temptation, we may think we hear the inner voice (God's will) to agree with our own wishes. 2 Peter 2:15-16, and Jude, 11th verse.

Greed and reward took Balaam. We cannot do
