read more into his language than he meant, because he is seeing only surface conditions. His conception of God has nothing attractive or winning. He is rather set before us as the Omnipotent Ruler who has ordained all the course of history, which man vainly seeks to comprehend; an austere Deity on whose favor or forbearance none may venture to presume. When we learn to know that God is Law and that Law is Love (conscious unity), we may then realize that the use of God's law is not that of servitude, but it is freedom of fulfillment and self-revelation.

There was a little city and few men within it; and there came a great king against it and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it. Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he, by his wisdom, delivered it; yet no man remembered that same poor man.

The soul is this little city in which the strength of men, or human opinions, count not.

"Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit saith the Lord of hosts." Zech. 4:6.

Charity and industry to be exercised in hope, he exhorts men to labor in joy, even amid uncertainties. "Money answereth all things." But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things shall be added. First things first.
