discourse, addressed to believers generally, but more particularly to the Gentiles in Asia Minor, probably in the neighborhood of its chief city, Ephesus. Some place the time of its writing before the destruction of Jerusalem, others towards the end of the first century, thinking it bears marks of combating the Gnostic teachings of that time. The theme in this and the following two epistles is Love, conscious unity.

Our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.

"God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all." If we say we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we are ignorant of the Truth of God and our relation to God. In the light of understanding we do not say we are not ignorant (we have no sin) but we acknowledge our place in unfoldment into the Truth of our Divinity and our Divine possibility of bringing it forth in our living.
