observation, and effect is its only source of wisdom; it is called the serpent because it shall go, or move only on the surface of things, and partake of or eat dust, which means it can only partake of appearance.

The command is that we shall not believe that we can have within ourselves from one Source, two results which are opposite to each other. Since there is but one source in Truth, all results are good, for a good Source and Cause cannot bring forth an evil result or effect. The eyes opened to good and evil, means they are opened to duality, opposites; they are ready to contrast appearances, but do not compare living things with God; so conclusions are ceaselessly being formed from what is observed.

Our thoughts, words and deeds are governed by these conclusions; and, since they have no basis but effect, they contradict real knowledge, hence there is apparent contradiction going on in thought, the inharmony of which words, deeds and sensations partake. Then it is that Adam hears the voice of the Lord God in the wind of the day, not within himself, and it is true at all times, with all people, that when they look without for God, they do not hear his voice within and have hid themselves in external things. So it is said that Adam and his wife hid themselves amongst the trees in the garden. This represents a belief in
