Whether the stories of the Bible are literally true or not does not make any difference. The chief reason that this story, termed the "fall of man," is so well known so far as the the scriptures are concerned, is because of certain expressions of Paul. The prophets do not say anything about it, nor is it referred to in any other place in the Old Testament. Jesus does not mention it. Adam and Eve represent the race to us in its first spiritual consciousness, interpreting from its immature conceptions and seeking wisdom and all goodness just as fast as they came to see any value in goodness. We do not think they were the first human beings, We think they represent man's first glimpse of spiritual consciousness. (We are told that Adam was a living soul.) We can conceive of people existing before them, but without any spiritual consciousness. We think of them --- Adam and Eve --- as the awakening soul, the first desire for wisdom and goodness, in that consciousness it was very easy for them to turn to the external as the source of wisdom.
