by their concentrated force and the rich imagery of their language. The religious character recedes far into the background; particularly in Chapters 25, 27 they are for the most part, sayings bearing purely upon a prudent direction of the conduct of life.

Entitled "Words of Agur," made up of enigmatical sayings and a few numerical proverbs such as meet us in Prov. 6:6-19.

Exhortations to Lemuel, king of Massa, spoken by his mother, who cautions her son against wine and women and exhorts him to rule righteously.

The book closes with a poem, standing by it self, without any connection with what precedes, devoted to a eulogy on the virtuous housewife.

It is a characteristic circumstance that these proverbs in the. main agree in their religious and ethical requirements with those of the prophets.

We find the same estimate of sacrifice in Prov. 15:8 and 21:3-27, as in Amos 5:18, Hos. 6:6, Ezek. 1:11 the same praise of Humility and warning against pride in Prov. 11:2, 14:29, 15:1, 4, 18, 25, 33, 16:5-8, 17:19, 18:12, 19:11., 21:4, 22:4, as compared with Isa.:11, Amos 6:8, Hos. 7:11 and Mic. 6:8; the same denunciation of those who oppress the poor, and the same commending of care for the latter in Prov. 14:31, 17:5, 18:23, 19:1-7, 22:2-7, 28:3-6, 27 29:13, as compared with Amos
