4:1, Hos. 5:10 and Mic. 2:3-8. Like the prophets, these proverbs see in the fear (reverence) of God the foundation of all piety and morality, and in numerous passages they exhort men to this fear.

But the unique relation between Jehovah and Israel, of which the prophets never lost sight, has here disappeared., and the individual conception of religion has taken its place. The upright and the ungodly, the proud and the humble, the understanding and the foolish, are the contrasted categories with which the proverbs have to do.

In the proverbs monotheism (doctrine. of one God only) holds undisputed sway, and the consequences that result from it are not defended, but assumed as self-evident, and only the practical points of view insisted upon: God is the creator of rich and poor, Prov. 14:31, 22:2, 29:13; God is Omniscient, Prov. 15:3, 11, 16:2, 17:3, 21:2, 24:11 He directs all things, the actions of men, Prov. 16:1, 9, 33, 19:21, 20:24, 21:1, 30, 29:26.

There is no mention of the Messianic deliverance, but a belief in individual retribution, as this has been growing up since. the days of Jeremiah and Ezekiel. Prov. 10:3, 24, 29, 11:3, 8, 31, 12:2, 13, 21, 13:6, 15:29..

As in some of the Psalms, the godly are cautioned against the envy awakened by the prosperity of the wicked, and have their attention
