"Prince of all prophets." He was the greatest of the Hebrew prophets, by the strength of his individuality, the wisdom of his statesmanship, the length and unbroken assurance of his ministry, the divine service which he rendered to Judah at the greatest crisis of her history, the purity and grandeur of his style, and the influence he exerted on subsequent prophecy.

Isaiah was born about 760 B. C., seven years before the reputed foundation of Rome he was a child when Amos appeared at Bethel, 755 or 750, and a youth when Hosea began to prophesy in North Israel. Micah was his younger contemporary. The possibility is strong that this prophet came of noble birth, from a royal family, and that he was a city-bred man. In interest and thought he .concentrates on the city his habits were adjusted to city life. He was influential in court; his usefulness and power as prophet were due largely to his knowledge of affairs.

Efficiency has place in the work of the kingdom of God. The length of Isaiah's career was at least fifty years. He lived through the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah. Inscriptions of Assyria and Babylon relate deeds of monarchs for their glory. In Egypt laymen were buried with their own written statements of their good deeds for their gods to see.
